The circus is trying to provide an information forum for communicating between mathematicians working on computational partial differential equations. The success has been demonstrated by the last 4 annual meetings -- 1996 at KTH in Stockholm; 1997 at the University of Oslo; 1998 at Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg; and 1999 at Helsinki University of Technology in Finland.
The local organizers for the meetings are Magne Espedal (Magne.Espedal@mi.uib.no) and Xue-Cheng Tai (tai@mi.uib.no). The organizing committee consists of Claes Johnson, Juhani Pitkaranta, Anders Szepessy, and Ragnar Winther. We would like to welcome you to Bergen and appreciate your support to keep this nice meeting to continue to this new millenium.
As was indicated for the earlier meetings of this series, the form of our meeting is inspired by Babuska's finite element circus: everyone is welcome, nobody is invited or we can also say that all of you are invited. This means that everybody have the chance to talk. The meeting will start with a short session where the participants indicate if they will talk or not. The program will then be determined by dividing the available time with the number of speakers. If you plan to participate in the meeting, we would appreciate that you inform us on email (tai@mi.uib.no).
Email is preferred for the communication. The meeting will take place at the Mathematics Department, University off Bergen. Location for the meeting rooms will be sent to the participants later by email. We plan to start at 13:00, March 10 and end at 16.00 March 11. This meeting is purely used to provide an informal communication forum. There is no registration fee and the participants should contact directly the hotels to make the hotel reservations.
The best way to reach the hotels is to take the airport bus. For Rica travel hotel, get off in the center of the city beside the SAS Hotel Norge and it is only 100 meters to the hotel. For the Hotel Park Pension, get off at the central buss station, walk to the front gate, follow the road in front of the bus station and the hotel is at the end of the road in the direction up to the hill. The distance is less than 800 meters. It takes about 10 minutes to walk from Rica to the institute. The Hotel Park Pension is inside the campus and just takes 2 or 3 minutes to the institute. If the bus is not convenient for you, a taxi can take you directly to the hotels and will cost between 200 to 300 NOK. The weather in Bergen is normally not cold, but can be rainy (it can be shiny when it does not rain). Take an umbrella or a jacket that can tolerate some rain.
We appreciate if you could forward this information to interested colleagues.
