This page presents the SYNODE project (SYmmetries in Numerical solution of Ordinary Differential Equations). The project's main objective is to establish international collaboration and promote international relationships through scientific activity.

The people of the SYNODE project

The Boss Professor Syvert P. Nørsett. The project leader and grandfather of the group. Syvert has been working mostly with Professor Iserles at Cambridge University, and most of his papers related to the project are about the Magnus expansion, used for solving linear differential equations. He was the PhD supervisor of Hans Munthe-Kaas, Anne Kværnø, and Brynjulf Owren.
hansemann Professor Hans Munthe-Kaas. One of the driving forces in the project. Hans is famous for inventing the so called Runge-Kutta-Munthe-Kaas methods early in the project period, but has worked on a variety of topics, mostly related to Lie group methods. He has collaborated with many different people. He supervised Kenth Engø, who defended his thesis November 2000. Currently supervising Andrzej Suslowicz and Stein Krogstad. He has an important position in the international community in geometric integration.
Professor Brynjulf Owren. Has been working mostly on Lie group methods. Supervised Arne Marthinsen and Roman Kozlov.
Associate professor Anne Kværnø. Anne has a background in Differential Algebraic Equations, and many of her early papers focus on extensions of the order theory of Butcher. Recently she has worked on geometric integration with Ben Leimkuhler, and is involved with various applications, like electrical circuit simulation, together with research groups in Germany.
son of a preacher man Adjunct Professor Arne Marthinsen The first PhD student of the project and supervised by Owren. His thesis consisted of no less than 11 papers, all related to Lie group methods, and all being published in international journals with referee. Thesis defense took place May 14, 1999, opponents were Ernst Hairer and Debra Lewis. Marthinsen has also been strongly involved in the Diffman software development. As of today his works in Øgrey A/S, Farsund, but keeps in touch with the SYNODE group through his Adjunct professorship and by assisting in further development of Diffman.
Negotiator I Postdoc Antonella Zanna. A young and very productive researcher who has worked on various topics, perhaps the most important ones are: Isospectral integration, Collocation with Fer and Magnus expansions, and applications of generalized polar decompositions in linear algebra and geometric integration. She did her PhD with Arieh Iserles at Cambridge University. After she moved to Bergen in 1999, she has strengthened the group considerably, and despite her young age, is to be considered a senior worker in this field.
Postdoc Elena Celledoni Another young and promising researcher who has a background in linear algebra, but who now works mostly on topics within geometric integration. Her main contributions are: Approximation of the matrix exponential in the Lie algebra setting, and the derivation and analysis of local coordinates on manifolds. Has a PhD from University of Padova, and has been postdoc at Cambridge, and MSRI, Berkeley.
KFC PhD Kenth Engø Kenth was the first PhD student in Bergen within the SYNODE activity, and he defended his thesis on November 12, 2000. His opponents were Sebastian Reich and Gustaf Søderlind, supervisor was Hans Munthe-Kaas. Kenth submitted 9 papers for his PhD, most of them related to Lie group methods, and all being published in well reputed journals. The review from the committee was very positive. He is perhaps the driving force in developing the Matlab toolbox Diffman. Kenth now works in Telenor, the norwegian telephone company, but keeps in touch via, among other activities, the work on Diffman.
Radiator II PhD Roman Kozlov Defended his thesis on January 5th, 2001. Roman has been working on symmetries is difference equations, his work thereby differs from most of the other activity in the SYNODE project. His opponents were Chris Budd and Peter Olver, and his supervisor Brynjulf Owren. Kozlov got a very good review and his 7 papers will all be published in international journals of high standing. He now works in Statens strålevern a Norwegian government office. We hope to see Roman again in academic circles fairly soon.
Train-rider PhD student Andrzej Suslowicz Has been in the PhD program for some time now, and has mostly worked on solving various types of heat equations by means of Lie group methods. His supervisor is Hans Munthe-Kaas.
Mr Stiefel PhD student Stein Krogstad Has worked on his PhD for ca 1 year. Supervisor: Hans. He has found some nice results on solving ODEs on Stiefel manifolds.
PhD student Borislav Minchev Started his PhD January 2002 under supervision of Hans.
Rookie PhD student Håvard Berland Is starting his PhD August 2002 under supervision of Brynjulf. Håvard is well trained in the basic theory of our field, having taken courses on Manifolds and Geometric Integration. He finished his MSc thesis June 2002, where he found some nice results on isotropy corrections of Lie group methods.
