Optimal constants for Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities on the real line

Abstract: Multiplicative inequalities of this type are very useful, for example in the study of stability for nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations in unbounded domains. I will show how the optimal constants for certain Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities on the real line can be found through a variational approach. To show the existence of a minimizer, the method of concentration-compactness is used.
