Vertex algebras

Craig Snydal

Preliminary abstract: Vertex algebras have provided both mathematicians and physicists with a useful tool in which to study areas ranging from the Monster sporadic group to string theories. But they have thus far been understood only as useful tools and not as naturally occuring objects. In this talk I will show how vetex algebras appear naturally as monoids in a certain category of representations of a Hopf algebra.
