Preliminary abstract: Many attempts have been made to develop a theory of (weak) n-categories, none of them very satisfactory yet. I want to try to explain why the task is not straightforward, and how it raises some subtle and interesting questions, many of them of a topological nature. Perhaps it will also be possible to sketch out one or two of the proposed definitions of n-category.
