"Categories and cohomology theories". This time I have allowed myself to steal the title from G. Segals influential 1974 paper. We won't be all that ambitious. We'll end our discussion from the last lecture on the classifying spaces for augmented monoids, by considering the nerve in some detail. After that we will move on and study gamma-sets, in order to model abelian structures. If time allows we shall take a brief look at the smash product.

"Augmented monoids and their classifying spaces". Augmented monoids have a map back to the unit (as a part of the data). How does this affect our codification schemes? The answer is that the (augmented) cobar construction which was forced upon us last time, is replaced by the "classifying space" (also known as the "nerve"). As a byproduct, this will allow us to widen our scope a bit from monoids to categories of all shades.

Note new place!! Time: 14.15, Wednesday 16th. Place: SII 0656.
"The simplicial category and the universal monoid". %Custom built for my students, but perhaps of somewhat wider %interest. I will slowly and carefully explain how to encode monoid-like structures, and what it's got to do with spaces
