Agenda

1. Feedback on the course in general (that is, lecture, module pages, textbook, information,..)

The course is well designed with many learning resources. The textbook and module pages go well together. The lectures are well received.

2. Feedback on the compulsory exercises

The size and level of difficulty is well adapted to the course goals. The exercises give good learning outcome. However, in a busy study situation the exercise is often divided among group members and only the part that one is responsible for is worked hard on. It is easy to “just” copy R-code etc. from the book and module pages without really understanding what is going on. Mette commented that working with the compulsory exercises before exam would be a good way to prepare for the exam.

For the year 3 students (IndMat) many courses have compulsory hand in of exericses noe in April, and some students would appreciate an extended deadline for the last exercise.

  • Action: we change the date for handing in Compulsory exercise 3 to Friday May 4 at 16.00. Done.
  • Added supervision: Wednesday May 2 10-12 in 656, 6. etg, sentralbygg 2 (Mette) and if needed Andreas is available on Friday May 4 in his office Materialteknisk 3-128.

3. Finishing up the course

Next week is Module 11 on neural nets - not in the book - so maybe more important for students to attend the lecture this week? The last week - Monday April 23- Mette will give an overview of the course and show some examples of possible exam questions. A trial exam (from UiO spring 2017) is already available under “Exam” in left menu.

Permitted aids for the written exam is C= specified aids + calculator. Mette asked if the students would like to have “no aids” vs “one yellow A5 sheet with your own handwritten notes”. The students will report back on this issue. This would not - to a substantial degree - influence how the exam is made.

The written exam is on Thursday May 24. We targeted May 14-16 or May 18, and May 22 and May 23 as possible dates for supervision.

  • Booking: Wednesday May 16 at 10-12 in 734, 7etg, sentralbygg 2. (Mette present)
  • Booking: May 22+23 10-12 in Smia. (Mette present)

We discussed if the supervision should contain an element of “questions asked in plenum” or only “one-to-one”, and Mette expressed worries that if there were announced that questions would be answered in plenum that students would think there was anything to miss if they did not attend. There should ideally not be any need for plenary questions.

  • Action: Mette have arranged a “Discussion board” on Bb, where all can post (also anonymously).
  • Action: If important questions come up Mette promise to post answers to all on Bb.

4. Other business

We discussed when the 3rd meeting with the reference group should be. Ideally we would like that to be after the exam - so we also could discuss the exam. We will see wrt dates for when grading is finished and when students have left before deciding. There is a 3 week deadline for the grading, which means with May 24 as exam date the grading must be done on June 15 at the latest.
