Approximations of the wave equation in seismic and ultrasonic imaging

DIFTA 2005–03–10

Abstract: Parabolic wave equation approximations have been used to describe wave propagation with a preferred direction in a numver of applications. In seismic imaging it is an important tool in the image reconstruction process. Furthermore, it is conveniently reduces the computational effort required to perform simulated ultrasound imaging. This talk will review parabolic approximations in a medium with variable propagation speed, and how the approximations affect properties such as reflection/transmission of a propagating wave at boundaries.
