Reflection of Spherical Waves.

DIFTA 2006–09–08

Abstract: In 1909 Sommerfeld gave an exact solution for the reflection of a spherical wave from a plane surface in terms of an oscillatory integral and also presented an asymptotic solution. Today this exact solution, and in particular an asymptotic solution given by Chien and Soroka in 1975, is a key ingredient in the development of a common method for noise mapping calculations within the EU. It is hence of some renewed importance to investigate the accuracy and the range of validity of the Chien–Soroka approximation. For the exact solution it is demonstrated that it is sufficient to have the general solution for the case where both source and receiver are at the boundary.
