On the stability of contact discontinuity for compressible Navier-Stokes equations with free boundary

Abstract: The asymptotic behavior toward the contact discontinuity for the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations with free boundary is investigated in this paper. A nonlinear diffusive wave, which approximates the contact discontinuity on any finite time interval, is constructed. Its asymptotic stability is further proved if the strength of the contact discontinuity is suitably small.
