Project introduction

Exponential integrators is a class of integrators for nonlinear systems of ordinary differential equations. We split the equation in a linear term and a nonlinear term,

 \dot{u} = L u + N(u), \qquad u(0) = u_0

The linear L operator is assumed stiff, thereby posing problems for ordinary classic solvers, as they usually need implicit treatment, which is problematic for nonlinear equations. Exponential integrators treat the linear part exactly, thus making it possible to use high order explicit methods.

Our project aims at understanding exponential integrators and to develop new and better schemes of this type suitable for a variety of differential equations, in particular semi-discretised PDEs.
